Calligraphy
Ikhwan-us-Safa, the oldest philosophical encyclopaedia of Arabic-Islamic civilisation,-and
in one sense of the word the first encyclopaedia of its kind, in the history of
human development,-in one of its treatises, evaluates the place of Arabic as compared
with that of other languages.
It states: "Arabic in respect of other languages is like the human form in respect
of living beings. The human form is the last phase of development of all living
beings. Likewise, the Arabic language is the perfection of all languages and so
far as its script is concerned, the perfection of the art of calligraphy."
Ikhwan-us-Safa also commends highly the Arabic script as the artistic representation
of the language.
"It should be written in the beautiful, the exact, the complete and the perfect of
all the scripts."
